Gentle, Healthy – Pampering!– Dentistry for the Whole Family
Smiles help make every day in Chicago sunnier… and the world a better place! What could be better? We love smiles – that’s why we offer all the gentle yet advanced general and preventive dental services your family needs to help get their smiles healthy and stay that way.
One of the most important aspects of your general dental care is keeping current on your dental exams and screenings. We do a comprehensive exam at every visit, checking your teeth for cavities or other damage, your gums for any sign of gum disease, and your entire mouth for the very first signs of oral cancer. All of these exams and screenings are designed to ensure that even the smallest problems will be caught early – when they are easier to treat and have much less impact on your systemic health.
Oral Cancer Screenings
Oral cancer should not be taken lightly – this cancer strikes an estimated 34,360 Americans every year and can be caused by something as simple as too much sun exposure! That’s why we recommend that you add it to your list of regular cancer screenings and that you have a VELScope screening, in conjunction with the traditional oral cancer screening, every six months.
Keeping your teeth clean is one of the most important things you can do for your smile. That’s why we emphasize the importance of your regularly scheduled hygiene visits. Even if you brush and floss as well as you should, without these visits to keep your teeth clean, sticky plaque can turn into calculus or tartar, a hard mineralized layer that holds dangerous bacteria close to your gums and is a major contributor to gum disease.
For maximum comfort and efficiency, we use ultrasonic scalers. These tools can be used both for regular cleanings and for more advanced periodontal care. Because they clean with high frequency sound waves, they are not only amazingly gentle but have also been proven effective in removing tartar from both above and below the gum line.
Perio Therapy (Arestin)
More than 85 percent of people have some level of periodontal or gum disease but it is often misdiagnosed or simply ignored. How is that possible? Many people either skip or avoid their regular check ups and cleanings thinking that when periodontal disease become symptomatic, they will go for treatment. The trouble with that thinking is that periodontal disease is very often asymptomatic (or present with no symptoms at all!) until it is advanced enough to be adversely affecting the whole body. In fact, link after link has been drawn between gum disease and systemic diseases and disorders such as inflammation, lowered immune system, cancers, heart disease, pregnancy problems and even obesity.
If we discover that you have an active gum infection, we can treat and heal your gums with a variety of new technologies. At The Smile Group, we use a combination of these innovative technologies for treatment that is more thorough and pain-free than ever before:
- Ultrasonic scalers painlessly deep clean using sound waves for effective and gentle scaling and root planing
- High-tech soft tissue lasers kill bacteria and remove diseased tissue
- Powerful antibiotics, such as Arrestin, kill bacteria under the gum line with microspheres that stay under the gums for up to 21 days
If your gums bleed when you brush, or it has been a while since your last cleaning and checkup, please call us today. Remember, protecting the health of your gums protects the health of your entire body!
Every day your teeth lose some of their protective minerals. When you or your children consume acidic foods or drinks, such as sodas, and fail to brush as well as you should, tooth enamel can become damaged. One way to help strengthen teeth and reverse this damage is through remineralizing fluoride treatments. Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay by making the tooth more resistant to acid attacks from plaque bacteria and sugars in the mouth. It also reverses early decay. In children under six years of age, fluoride becomes incorporated into the development of permanent teeth and for adults, it helps decrease sensitivity!
The American Dental Association estimates that over 5 million kids suffer from damaged teeth every year! Why not protect those precious smiles the better, more dependable way – with a custom-fitted sports mouth guard from The Smile Group? Custom-made mouth guards are not only more protective they are more comfortable so kids are more likely to wear them!
Bruxism Night Guards
You have invested a lot in keeping your smile healthy and getting it in good shape. Now how are you protecting that investment? Many of our patients grind their teeth and don’t even realize it! The problem is, grinding your teeth can cause a wide variety of problems from wearing down or breaking your teeth (and your restorations), to jaw disorders and chronic headaches. If we see signs of bruxism or grinding, we can fit you with a custom-made bruxism guard, night guard or occlusal splint to reduce the damage to your teeth from grinding or clenching and relieve your TMJ pain. The more you wear your appliance, the better you feel and the more you protect your teeth!
Our dentistry is designed to keep your family’s smiles strong and healthy, preventing unforeseen pain or tooth breakage and minimizing the need for emergency treatment. But no matter how careful you are with your smile, emergencies do occasionally happen. And when a dental emergency occurs, you can count on the office you know and trust to help you feel better. Just call The Smile Group’s regular phone number and we will let you know how to contact us directly.
